Dudley was born in Cincinnati, Ohio and was educated at Lake Forest College in Evanston, Illinois and Chicago, where he majored in oral surgery. In 1917 he appeared in his first film, Seven Keys to Baldpate, and then made three other silent films through 1921. After 1922 he worked consistently, appearing in three or four films a year, and making the transition to sound films in 1929 with The Bellamy Trial. Dudley often played characters with a quick temper, including jurors, shopkeepers, ticket agents, court clerks and justices of the peace, as well as an occasional farmer, hobo, or laborer. His performances in these small parts were frequently uncredited. In the 1940s, Dudley was part of Preston Sturges' unofficial "stock company" of character actors, appearing in six films written and directed by Sturges. His most distinctive and memorable role for Sturges was the "Wienie King" in 1942's The Palm Beach Story, the funny little self-made rich man with a big hat who spontaneously bankrolls Claudette Colbert and Joel McCrea on their escapade. The 5' 9" Dudley, who was the founder of the "Troupers Club of Hollywood", was married to Elaine Anderson, and they had two girls, Jewell and Patricia Lee. He made his final film, As Young as You Feel, in 1951, and died in 1955 in San Clemente, California. *[TMDb note: The California Death Index indicates that Mr. Dudley died on 12 November 1955. That date should therefore be considered accurate and official.] The Jackpot1950-11-01 Strike It Rich1948-12-01 Race Street1948-09-11 Sleep, My Love1948-02-18 Mourning Becomes1947-11-19 Christmas Eve1947-10-31 Magic Town1947-10-07 Living in a Big 1947-06-10 The Sin of Harol1947-04-04 Singin' in the C1946-12-26 San Quentin1946-12-16 Gallant Journey1946-09-24 San Antonio1945-12-29 The Strange Affa1945-08-17 Lady on a Train1945-08-03 Belle of the Yuk1944-12-27 The Doughgirls1944-11-25 Casanova Brown1944-08-23 It Happened Tomo1944-03-31 Main Street Toda1944-03-25 The Miracle of M1944-09-18 Happy Land1943-11-10 Son of Dracula1943-11-05 Honeymoon Lodge1943-07-23 The Ghost and th1943-04-19 The Palm Beach S1942-08-28 All That Money C1941-10-17 Citizen Kane1941-04-17 The Lady Eve1941-02-25 Stranger on the 1940-08-16 Lucky Partners1940-08-02 When the Daltons1940-08-23 Haunted House1940-07-21 The House of the1940-04-12 Mr. Smith Goes t1939-10-19 Yankee Doodle Go1939-06-17 Zenobia1939-04-21 Almost a Gentlem1939-03-31 The Toast of New1937-07-22 The Mighty Treve1937-01-17 Fury1936-06-05 The Prisoner of 1936-02-28 The Perfect Set-1936-02-01 Paddy O'Day1936-01-17 Frisco Kid1935-11-30 3 Kids and a Que1935-10-21 The Gilded Lily1935-01-25 Wild Gold1934-06-08 Midnight Mary1933-06-30 Face in the Sky1933-01-15 Three Wise Girls1932-02-10 Broken Lullaby1932-01-19 An American Trag1931-08-22 Scandal Sheet1931-01-31 Conspiracy1930-08-10 Dames Ahoy1930-02-09 Burning Up1930-02-01 Wide Open1930-02-01 Dynamite1929-12-13 Big News1929-09-06 Shanghai Rose1929-01-01 Fools for Luck1928-06-11 The Night Flyer1928-02-05 Casey at the Bat1927-03-08 The Marriage Cla1926-09-12 For Heaven's Sak1926-04-05 A Woman of the W1925-12-28 The Last Edition1925-11-08 On the Stroke of1924-10-30 The Extra Girl1923-10-28 The Tiger's Claw1923-04-22 Making a Man1922-12-17 The Ninety and N1922-12-17 One a Minute1921-06-19 Traveling Salesm1921-06-05 The Fourteenth M1920-09-01 Seven Keys to Ba1917-10-16
